NBA 2K26's 'Green or Miss' Meta Doomed to Fail
There's plenty of positives to take from the first days of launch, but "green or miss" is going to overshadow everything.
Having now played NBA 2K26 since Friday, I can say there is plenty of good things to take from the game, but as everyone settles in and realizes that “green or miss” is officially here, it’s likely to put 2K developers in an impossible situation in the weeks ahead.
This decision by the 2K devs has been a long time coming. I’ve been on record saying I’m okay with 2K going the “green or miss” route this year because it’s a logical endpoint for something they’ve clearly wanted to try for years. Like many sports games, 2K has to cater to multiple audiences — both online and offline — who are all looking for something different from their game. Plus, green or miss has already been close to a reality in various modes in the past, so why not just go all the way?
Tuning and tweaking gameplay so that everyone is happy is next to impossible, and so some games go the route of trying to split the audience like EA FC is doing this year, and then others go the route of trying things like “playstyles” that are an even more extreme concept. Madden is a game that uses playstyles, and this means it’s not just some slider changes, but rather more fundamental “under the hood” changes that alter aspects of gameplay that we can’t see via the sliders menu.
A weekly reminder that I’d appreciate if even more of you pop in to the OS Discord as we just passed 1,200 members this week. I’m looking to do a watchalong for the Cowboys/Eagles NFL opener on Thursday night in Discord, so come hang and watch the game if you want.
We’re also continuing to run the 30-day FREE trial here for anyone who wants to test the waters and receive the full extra newsletter on Wednesdays. Upon joining the Discord, DM either Rob S (thekernelpop) or ChaseB (chucklesbiscotti), letting us know you’ve signed up for the premium newsletter. Either one of us will add you to the extra Supporters area on Discord, and we have a snazzy role and badge to give you on Discord, too.
The issue is making everyone happy is next to impossible, and tuning various gameplay styles or slider sets takes a ton of post-release support to even hold up. Even 2K has been doing tuning like this for years trying to tweak things in certain modes while leaving others untouched. There’s plenty of conspiracies and even hard facts that show you can’t always contain those changes to specific modes as much as you might try, and 2K fans know all about that.
So today’s premium newsletter is a bit of a “reckoning” newsletter where I will talk some about stuff I like and don’t like in 2K26, but it’s mostly going to be talking about “green or miss” and why it’s likely doomed to fail this year because of what it will do to the community.
So let’s dive into things.
NBA 2K26 Reaches Its Shooting Game Endpoint
“Death is the enemy. The first enemy. And the last...The enemy always wins. But we still need to fight him. That’s all I know. You and I won’t find much joy while we’re here, but we can keep others alive. We can defend those who can’t defend themselves. I am the shield that guards the realms of men. Maybe we don’t need to understand any more than that. Maybe that’s enough.”
To be clear, plenty of people asked for this, especially those who play “comp” online modes, but green releases are the “death” I’ve been fighting against for 10+ years at this point. They were always going to win out at some point, but I’ve always been on the side saying that “green or miss” simply didn’t — and still doesn’t — make sense. NBA 2K is like most sports games out there where skill matters, but these are not competitive games, even as much as companies have tried to create esports leagues and competitive tournaments and everything else around them. They are not balanced for competitive play, and they’re not on the level of stuff like Counter-Strike in terms of an equal playing field because sports are not an even playing field. In sports, not everyone is equal.
You will never be Kevin Durant and that’s okay.
