How Diamond Dynasty Separates From the Pack in MLB The Show 26
Even with the server issues, DD remains the top dog in this space.
I am in Boston until next week, so I’m handing over the newsletter responsibilities to Kevin today.
He’s been playing a lot of Diamond Dynasty as of late, and so I thought it would be good to get some thoughts from him on the mode since I’ve been more focused elsewhere when talking about MLB The Show 26.
We have an official OS Account that you all can sign-up for now. I implore all of you, whether you want to subscribe to a paid tier or not, to go that site and sign-up. Go there, click the “Sign In” button and then use either Discord or your OS name to log-in and connect everything together.
If you had an OS Account, you could be partaking in our first community event using them, which was free for everyone to join. The March Madness bracket will end with a winner getting an OS hoodie engraved with their championship status on it. Steve and I are of course rocking close to last place, with only my ol’ MaddenMania brother krulmichael saving us from that fate as we enter the Sweet 16.
Lastly, please join the OS Discord.
DD is the one card mode that seems to have some traction among a good portion of the OS crowd, so Kevin thought it would be good to explain why the mode — despite the server issues — remains at the top of the mountain this year.
So let’s kick it over to him, and I’ll see you all next week.
Card-collecting modes have been around long enough that we can conclude by now that they simply aren't for everyone. As fun as it can be to collect your favorite players and build your very own dream team, the fantasy comes with some noticeable drawbacks that can eventually reveal themselves to be dealbreakers.
The biggest hurdles to their enjoyment continue to stem from the entrepreneurial spirit (read: greed) dwelling deep within companies like 2K and EA that can't help but infect the promising framework. This is how you find yourself inexplicably deep in credit card debt all because you tried to keep up with the Joneses by shelling out the big bucks needed to obtain the top-tier cards within these modes.
It's as if we're all stuck in the proverbial midway desperately seeking the prize on the highest shelf at some carnival game while some huckster keeps taking our sweaty cash all the while knowing the game's been forever rigged in their favor.

That's why Diamond Dynasty in MLB The Show has shown itself to be as rare as the gem in its name by bucking against the unscrupulous trends exhibited by games like NBA 2K26 and Madden 26. Making the finest cards the mode has to offer accessible just by playing the game and completing objectives, the playing field is kept level enough that you never have to feel as if you're at a competitive disadvantage.
It's almost surprising every year to see this continue given the surrounding sports gaming landscape, and yet here we are again with MLB The Show 26 offering the same balanced and refreshingly affordable approach to card collecting. It's not as if the mode is perfect (especially with those menus), but it's impossible to not appreciate and celebrate the dramatic difference in philosophies from the other titles.
Even when SDS chips away a bit at this mindset with limits on the number of cards you can sell or makes certain cards hard to acquire in certain packs, ultimately you can make a great a team for free — and if you’re really dedicated any card can be yours for free.
So how is this year's Diamond Dynasty staying ahead of the curve? Let's run through four different ways that the mode deals in success as it separates from the pack.

World Baseball Classic
At this point, it just seems like any year in which the World Baseball Classic is happening will inevitably translate to a better Diamond Dynasty mode in MLB The Show. The cards of the players representing their countries in the event can easily form a vital foundation for your Diamond Dynasty squad as you earn them through objectives or packs, especially when the MLB season is just starting up and there aren't a ton of better options available in the mode.
It's hardly as if these cards are lacking though. In fact, there are enough viable options at every position that it's easy to imagine building a few different lineups that each rely on different strengths. The appeal of the WBC cards is ultimately more unifying though. There's just something special about forming a squad of players all hailing from different countries that speaks to the universal power of the game to cross all kinds of borders.
Was I previously a fan of Chinese Taipei's Kungkuan Giljegiljaw? Never heard of him. But now? Love the guy.
Card Balance
Even this soon after the release of MLB The Show 26 though, there are already a growing number of possibilities aside from just the World Baseball classic cards to fill out your squad. If you know where to look and are savvy about your playing time, you can seek out legends from your favorite team, players from current rosters, or even utilize the skills of Negro League pioneers thanks to another installment of a feature that shines a spotlight on this forgotten chapter of baseball history.
The best part about it all is that there are a few cards that clearly stand out out as the definitive "greatest" and even the highest rated ones can't be acquired by stubs, so your credit card can't save you here. You'll need to carefully consider then what sort of skills you want your squad to display and whether you want to prioritize boom-or-bust power, speed on the basepaths, or solid defense in the field.
You might still run into the occasional matchup where you and your opponent run out the same starting pitcher on the mound, but that's bound to only become less common with the release of more cards in the coming months.

Parallel XP
Another reason why there are so many worthwhile cards available in MLB The Show 26 lies in how it has become easier to improve all cards by accruing XP while playing whatever you want in Diamond Dynasty. By completing specific objectives with cards, you can see them progress across five different tiers, each of which will come with a bump to abilities and overall rating.
A new feature also allows you to mod players at different tiers to boost targeted attributes while nerfing others. So if you really like having a certain card in your lineup, your commitment to that player will ultimately pay dividends down the road. Should you play your cards right, you could even ultimately become the very first player in the community who's able to fully maximize the potential of that player.
This all helps to create a better connection with players and cards while also allowing you to nurture unexpected aces up your sleeves that can be unleashed when the time is right.
Mode Variety
Although there aren't really any new ways to play within Diamond Dynasty in MLB The Show 26, you could argue that there were already enough options to keep you plenty busy. Are you someone who likes to play offline? Great, go ahead and check out Diamond Quest, Mini Seasons (where you can now play 3 or 9 inning games), Showdown, or any of the Conquest maps that will only be added to throughout the game's cycle.
Oh, what's that? You prefer an online challenge? Well there's Ranked, Events, or even Co-Op play (when it works right) if you want to bring some friends into the fold.
For my money though, there isn't a better mode in any sports game that's as good as Battle Royale. With short 3-inning games and a team-building draft where various strategies need to be considered, it always keeps you coming back for more to chase that flawless run. Multiplayer rewards might seem a little lackluster this year, but that's almost a welcome change of pace to see a sports game not cater quite so much to the online crowd.
